After meeting with a number of NHL teams, Will Butcher has signed a two-year deal with the New Jersey Devils. The Hobey Baker award winner and former University of Denver star inked the $1.85 million deal Sunday. Butcher won this year’s top college award by leading the Pioneers to the national championship this past April.
The 22-year-old registered 37 points (7 goals) last season in becoming only the seventh defenseman to ever win the Hobey Baker Award. In 158 career games with Denver, Butcher has scored 103 points (28 goals).
Although the Colorado Avalanche selected Butcher in the fifth round of the 2013 draft, he decided not to sign by the August 15th deadline. By missing the deadline, Butcher became a free agent and signed with the Devils for the maximum entry-level salary.
