NHL news: Record number of hat tricks

NHL news: Four players around the NHL scored hat tricks on the first two nights of the season, tying a 100-year-old record. The last time there were four hat tricks in season-opening games was in 1917, the NHL’s first season.

In 2017, two hat tricks were scored Wednesday – the opening night of the season, and two more on Thursday when other teams made their season debut.

Wednesday’s hat tricks were scored by the Edmonton Oilers’ Connor McDavid (second of career), in a 3-0 win over the Calgary Flames, and Philadelphia Flyers’ Wayne Simmonds (second of career), in a 5-3 victory against the San Jose Sharks.

On Thursday, three goals were scored by Chicago Blackhawks forward Brandon Saad (second of career, in a 10-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins) and Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin (18th of career, in a 5-4 shootout victory against the Ottawa Senators).
