David Backes to undergo colon surgery

Breaking NHL news: Backes to miss eight weeks

Breaking NHL news: The Boston Bruins have announced David Backes will undergo surgery to remove a portion of his colon.

Backes has diverticulitis, a disease which causes inflammation in the intestinal tract.

The forward has missed five games this season dealing with symptoms. The recovery period for this procedure is estimated at eight weeks, the Bruins said Wednesday. This means Backes should be set to return to the ice in early 2018.

The 33-year-old scored 17 goals (38 points) for the Bruins last season.
